Hamstring injuries are common in sports that involve sprinting, acceleration, deceleration, rapid change in direction, and jumping. It’s occurring in both recreational and professional sports and could lead to substantial time lost from sports and commonly reoccur. The hamstrings consist of three muscles: The biceps femoris, the semitendinosus, and the semimembranosus.

Risk Factors

In a systematic review and meta-analysis study by Grant Freckleton & Tania Pizzari (2017) on risk factors for hamstring muscle strain injury in sports. They highlighted age, previous hamstring injury, and quadriceps peak torque (strength) as the main risk factor.

They also mentioned a list of secondary factors that could increase the hamstring strain such as, hamstring flexibility, body weight, hip flexor flexibility, quadriceps flexibility, ankle dorsiflexion lunge ROM, playing a position, preconception (movement discrimination test) mental imagery, ethnicity, hamstring peak torque (strength).
